Documents Required

  • Passport with proper Visa

  • Legal residence papers
  • Statement that contents of shipment are for personal use and will not be sold for two years
  • Inventory (in Spanish) must be legalized at origin by Consulate of Ecuador
  • Immigrant certificate valid for customs clearance obtained in Ecuador (for returning Ecuadorians)
  • A written commitment that articles brought into the country duty-free will be dedicated to their own use and not for resale

Customs Regulations

  • CUSTOMER MUST BE IN COUNTRY AT TIME OF CUSTOMS CLEARANCE
  • Any cost incurred for obtaining this certificate is not included in the door-to-door cost of the move, and is for the Customer’s account
  • Shipments for foreigners and returning nationals must arrive within 90 days of the Customer
  • Shipments for immigrants must arrive within 120 days of the date the Visa was issued
  • Used household goods are dutiable for foreigners with Visa T1, T3 and T4
  • Used household goods are dutiable for immigrants with Visa 12-III, 12-IV, 12-V, 12-VII, 12-IX, and 12-X
  • Used household goods and personal effects are duty-free for:
    • Foreign diplomats
    • Ecuadorian diplomats
    • Ecuadorians retiring from official assignments in international organizations
    • Ecuadorians returning to the country with a minimum of three years residence abroad
    • Immigrants with Visa 10-II, 10-III, 10-IV, 10-V, and 10-VI
  • Shipments of household good into Ecuador are subject to duty. The application of duty is based on shipper's status.
  • Diplomats are allowed duty free entry of household goods.
  • Ecuadorians with at least one (1) year abroad are allowed duty free entry of household goods.
  • Immigrants (visa types 10-1 10-IV and 10-VI) are allowed duty free entry. These visas types are for long term immigrants who have secured a duty exemption in advance from the Ministry of Finance. The concession is called "Acuerdo de liberacion."
  • Foreigners (visa types 12 IV and 12 IX) will be required to pay on shipments of household goods and personal effects. Approximately 40% of CIF value which is determined by Customs and Excise in Ecuador. According to the Official governmental Bulletin Registrar from October 1st 1997, these two types of visas require an inspection at origin prior to shipping. These types of visas are for individuals with short term assignments in Ecuador. Most transferring employees wil fall into this category. The duty rate will be approximately thirty-five (35) percent.
  • All shipper may import one electric appliance. (Any extras may be dutiable)

Dutiable / Restricted Items

  • New items and shipments in excess of a certain valuation are subject to duties
  • Electrical appliances must not be shipped with original packing
  • Limited quantities of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products may be allowed
  • Only one of each item allowed, additional items subject to payment of duties

Prohibited Items

  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Drugs and narcotics
  • Pornographic material
  • Foodstuffs and live plants

Motor Vehicles

  • Vehicle should be less than one year old
  • Previous authorization from the Ministry of Finance required
  • Duties applicable
  • Documents required:
    • Owner Certificate
    • Two original invoices
    • Import License from the central bank prior to shipping
    • Verification Certificate

Pets

  • May import up to three pets
  • Documents required:
    • Health Certificate
    • Vaccine Certificate
