Who should you contact before you move?

The days leading up to a relocation can be daunting for some people, especially those who have yet to contact their service providers about a move. Take the time to notify these parties to avoid problems when moving to a new residence.

1. U.S. Postal Service
Updating your address takes only a few minutes and can be completed online or in person. Let the U.S. Postal Service know about your move so all of your mail gets forwarded to your new address. This can be done months in advance, and you can even specify your moving date to ensure a seamless transition.

2. Utility, cable and internet providers
Notify your utility, cable and internet providers so you can learn about taking your existing services to your new address. Some companies may only operate in certain parts of the country, so check to make sure they can offer you cable and internet services at your new residence. If not, look into alternate providers ahead of time to save you time and stress down the road.

Many cable and internet providers can be reached by phone or online, and some are available 24 hours a day. If you cannot take the services to a new address, ask if you need to return any equipment to these companies before you relocate. Additionally, make sure you let these providers know your moving date and when the services need to be shut off at your former residence.

3. Banks and credit card companies
Reach out to banks and credit card companies. These businesses can typically update your contact information in a few minutes, and this helps ensure that all future correspondence will go to your new address.

4. Schools
Parents may want to enroll their kids in schools closer to their new addresses. Inform the present school about the relocation and find out what transfer options are available. Be sure to check out schools close to a new residence before moving, as this can also help you determine how your children will get to and from their new school.

5. Relocation movers
A relocation and moving company features trained personnel who can assist homeowners. This type of business employs highly qualified experts and provides guidance to help people get ready for moving day. Contact relocation movers to learn about the services they can provide.
